Kasai marks 35-year landmark in Sunderland

One of Sunderland’s longest-established automotive manufacturers is celebrating 35 years of investment, partnership and growth in the city.

Kasai UK has marked 35 years since establishing its Sunderland operations with a special anniversary event attended by employees, partners and civic representatives.

The occasion also recognised the 80th anniversary of parent company Kasai Kogyo Japan.

As part of the celebrations, representatives from the business, Sunderland City Council, The Embassy of Japan and the Consulate General of Japan planted a Red Japanese Maple Tree at the company’s Washington site.

Chosen to symbolise endurance, balance and long-term growth, the tree will serve as a lasting reminder of the company’s commitment to the region.

A commemorative space has also been created to celebrate the company’s heritage and the contribution of employees and partners over the years.

Jill Usher, managing director of Kasai UK, said: “Reaching our 35th anniversary is an incredibly proud moment for everyone at Kasai UK.

“We’ve built a fantastic business in Sunderland thanks to the dedication of our employees, the support of our customers and the strong relationships we’ve developed with our partners across the region, including the city council.

“Over the last 35 years we’ve continued to evolve alongside the automotive industry, investing in new technologies, developing our workforce and embracing more sustainable ways of manufacturing.

“We’re proud of what we’ve achieved together and excited about what the future holds.”

Kasai UK employs just under 500 people at its Washington facility, where it manufactures interior trim components for major automotive brands.

The site produces more than 1.1 million door trims and more than nine million pillar and trunk hard trims annually.

Since opening in 1991, the business has become an established part of Sunderland’s automotive manufacturing sector, continuing to invest in its operations and workforce.

Its latest investment in solvent-free adhesive technology is helping reduce carbon emissions as part of wider sustainability ambitions.

Councillor James Jackson, cabinet member for Business, Housing and Regeneration at Sunderland City Council, was among the guests invited to attend Kasai’s celebration event, recognising the business’ significant contribution to the city’s economy.

Councillor Jackson added: “Kasai UK has been an important part of Sunderland's manufacturing story for 35 years and this anniversary is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate everything the company has achieved.

“Businesses like Kasai have helped establish Sunderland as one of Europe's leading automotive cities, creating skilled jobs, investing in innovation and demonstrating a long-term commitment to our community.

“On behalf of the city, I would like to congratulate everyone at Kasai on this remarkable milestone and wish them every success for the future.”
