Opening date set for Culture House
One of the North East’s most anticipated cultural venues will open its doors this autumn, bringing a new library, exhibition spaces and immersive experiences to Sunderland city centre.
Culture House Sunderland will officially open on Saturday, September 12, marking the completion of the multi-million-pound development at Keel Square.
The four-storey venue has been designed as a cultural hub for the city, featuring a new state-of-the-art library alongside exhibition galleries, digital creative spaces and flexible areas for performances, workshops, talks and community events.
Its opening exhibition, Our Home in Space, has been developed in collaboration with London's Barbican and will combine immersive technology with artworks exploring the relationship between Earth and the wider universe.
The venue will also house dedicated spaces for children and young people, including creative play areas, gaming facilities and study spaces, while a rooftop Sky Garden will provide space for events and public activities overlooking the city.
Independent food and drink operator Blacks Corner will run the venue’s ground-floor restaurant and café, as well as providing catering for events held throughout the building.
Councillor Ciera Hudspith, portfolio holder for culture, tourism and heritage at Sunderland City Council, said: “Culture House Sunderland will be a fantastic addition to the city, providing a key city centre focal point and a great attraction for both residents and visitors to enjoy.
“The mix of events, exhibitions, top of the range tech, resources and its outstanding food offering will make it a standout venue in the region, if not the UK.”
