RED Engineering Design appoints chief executive

London-headquartered RED Engineering Design has appointed Mark Smith as chief executive, as the company prepares for its next phase of international growth.

Mark succeeds Thierry Kalfon and takes on the role following more than a decade with the business.

Having joined RED in 2015, he became chief operating officer in 2023 and has played a key role in expanding the company’s global footprint into 12 new markets, growing its workforce to more than 1000 employees and strengthening its position in data centre and mission critical engineering.

A chartered engineer and fellow of both the IET and CIBSE, Mark brings more than 35 years’ experience delivering complex digital infrastructure and commercial engineering projects across the UK and Europe.

He said: “Artificial intelligence is fundamentally reshaping our industry.

“The infrastructure required to support the next generation of AI will demand new thinking around power, resilience, sustainability and engineering excellence.

“RED is uniquely positioned to help our clients solve these challenges.

“We have an outstanding team, exceptional technical capability and ambitious plans for the future.

“It is a tremendous privilege to lead the business into this next chapter.”

Mark’s appointment as chief executive comes as demand for AI-ready data centres and resilient digital infrastructure continues to grow worldwide.

Now part of Tractebel, RED Engineering Design has continued to expand its international presence across Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific while supporting major data centre developments and advancing its expertise in AI infrastructure.
