Gateshead office building gets £1.85 million revamp

A landmark office building has undergone a £1.85 million refurbishment to create a more flexible, wellbeing-focused workspace for businesses on Gateshead Quays.

Baltic Works, formerly known as Baltic Place, has been transformed by landlord South Shore Developments in response to growing demand for modern office environments that support employee wellbeing and flexible working.

The five-month refurbishment, delivered by Robertson Construction North East, has introduced a range of new facilities including a 24/7 gym, changing rooms, a landscaped courtyard, business lounge, self-service micro market and upgraded reception area.

The building also benefits from high-speed broadband, parcel lockers and electric vehicle charging points.

Designed to encourage collaboration, the new business lounge provides a mix of informal workspaces and private meeting pods, while energy-efficient improvements have helped maintain the building's BREEAM Excellent rating.

Sir Bill Robertson, former founder and executive chairman of Robertson Group and a director of South Shore Developments, said: “For almost two decades Baltic Works has been a key landmark on Gateshead Quay.

“With occupier requirements at the core of its offering, the refurbishment reflects the changing dynamics of the office environment, and the building remains an excellent option for occupiers who are looking to give their employees access to elevated facilities.”

Neil Kennedy, regional managing director at Robertson Construction North East, added: “As both main contractor and occupier, it was important that the spaces we helped create reflected how businesses want to use office environments today.

“The refurbishment has delivered modern spaces that encourage collaboration, wellbeing and productivity.”

The 131,000sq ft Grade A office building is home to occupiers including Santander, Northern Gas & Power, Gallagher and Lockton, with additional space available for businesses looking to establish or expand their presence on Gateshead Quays.

Arranged across two interconnected towers, Baltic Works offers flexible office accommodation from 3000sq ft, allowing businesses to grow within the building.

The offices also benefit from panoramic views across the River Tyne and are within walking distance of Newcastle city centre.

Matt Dawson, property manager at South Shore Developments, added: “When the building was originally developed, it met a growing demand for high-quality Grade A office space at competitive rates within the Newcastle-Gateshead market.

“This latest investment in Baltic Works recognises the desire for workplace environments that prioritise wellbeing, flexibility and convenience.

“We are pleased to offer occupiers a high-quality workplace that gives businesses greater choice in how their teams work, meet and collaborate.”
