Bus maker revs up for Australian expansion

A bus maker is aiming to drive growth Down Under.

Wrightbus is launching operations in Australia.

The company says the move marks a “significant new chapter for its international growth strategy”.

The Northern Ireland-based electric and hydrogen bus manufacturer adds it aims to “work in partnership with operators, governments and industry partners to help accelerate the transition to zero-emission public transport”.

Its venture will be unveiled at the Sydney-based Australasia Bus & Coach Expo on July 15, with its Kite battery-electric single deck, Kite hydrogen fuel cell single deck and StreetDeck battery-electric double decker set to be on show.

The 80-year-old firm’s endeavour will be led by Daniel Castro, regional director – Asia Pacific, and Julian Gurney, head of sales – Australia and New Zealand.

Jo Bamford, executive chair of Wrightbus, which operates as a division of Oxford-based Bamford Bus Company Holdings, said: “Australia represents a hugely important market.

“We are delighted to be back with a renewed focus and a long-term commitment to supporting the country’s transition to zero-emission public transport.”

Anna Shotbolt, British consul general and deputy trade commissioner – Asia Pacific (Australia and New Zealand), added: “Combining a proud heritage of British engineering with zero-emission expertise, Wrightbus will help operators and communities across Australia move toward a cleaner, greener transport future.”
