Window and door firm lands major hospital deal

A glazing firm has strengthened its order book with work on a £65 million mental health scheme.

Polar NE is set to deliver 150 reduced-ligature windows and doors to Bradford’s Lynfield Mount Hospital.

Bosses say the project will use modular construction techniques, with the Middlesbrough-based business fitting components at a Northern Ireland factory before shipping each living room-sized unit across the Irish Sea.

They add the work on the “completely unique mental health space… will act as the blueprint for other projects going forward”.

The hospital revamp – led by UK and Ireland-based main contractor McAvoy Group – will add a two-storey ward, refurbish an existing building and add en-suite facilities to two wards.

Work, which will also include the creation of outdoor garden spaces and recreational areas, is earmarked for completion in 2028.

The project follows a number of deals to supply hundreds of windows to hospitals and schools across the North East, and a headline agreement to send 120 windows to Scotland’s £85 million women-only HMP Stirling prison.

Nick Sutton, Polar NE partnership manager, said: “We have worked on modular builds for traditional hospitals, and many trusts will want to see the result of this latest project because there is so much belief in the modular approach.

“It is safer, quicker and provides a much more controlled environment throughout the build.”

Rob Lofthouse, Polar NE operations manager, added: “This is exactly the type of project where our experience and product range come together.

“We find solutions that meet the very specific needs of mental health environments.

“Lynfield Mount Hospital marks the latest collaboration between Polar NE, P+HS Architects and Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust, and it shows the confidence and trust repeatedly placed in us when it comes to delivering complex projects.”
