Work begins to improve Calderdale transport links

Plans to improve walking and cycling links between Elland and West Vale have moved a step closer as work gets underway on a new infrastructure scheme.

County Durham-based contractor Esh Construction has begun preparatory works on the scheme, which will deliver two new pedestrian and cycle bridges alongside upgrades to existing routes, helping improve access to the planned Elland Rail Station.

Appointed by Calderdale Council earlier this year, Esh has worked with design partner Fairhurst to develop the detailed designs ahead of construction getting underway.

In Elland, the project will see a new bridge built across the River Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation, creating direct links between Park Road, Gas Works Lane and Riverside Park.

Existing pedestrian routes and the canal towpath will also be upgraded, while a new children’s play area and landscaping improvements will enhance the surrounding public spaces.

A second bridge in West Vale will provide a new walking and cycling route across the River Calder, connecting the village to Elland via the canal, alongside a new access route from Stainland Road.

Preparatory works now underway include ground investigations, piling platforms and the construction of a crane pad, with Riverside Park serving as a temporary works area during construction.

Steven Garrigan, divisional director at Esh Construction, said: “We are pleased to be working in partnership with Calderdale Council to bring our knowledge and expertise in delivering high-quality public realm schemes to the Elland Access Package.

“Projects like this make a real difference to communities and are a catalyst for future growth and development.

“Throughout the scheme we are committed to making an impact locally by delivering a raft of social value initiatives.

“This will include providing work experience placements, apprenticeship and T Level opportunities on site, donations, volunteering, and reinvesting money into the local economy through responsible procurement.”

The project was approved in November 2024 and has been procured through YORhub’s YORcivil3 framework.

It is funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund and the UK Government's Transforming Cities Fund, supporting wider efforts to improve sustainable transport and connectivity across Calderdale.
