Giving Coalition launched to support young people
A new initiative bringing together businesses, charities and philanthropists has been launched to help expand opportunities for young people across County Durham, Darlington, Hartlepool and Stockton.
The Giving Coalition, launched by Dr Arnab Basu MBE DL, the High Sheriff of the County Palatine of Durham, in partnership with Point North, aims to raise funds for the High Sheriff Youth Awards 2027, providing grants to grassroots organisations supporting the region’s next generation.
The coalition was officially unveiled during a reception at Durham Castle, following the Matins service for His Majesty’s Courts of Justice, with civic leaders, businesses and community representatives invited to pledge their support.
Funding raised through the initiative will help community organisations deliver projects that build young people's confidence, develop ambition and create opportunities through activities ranging from mentoring and youth clubs to special educational provision and programmes tackling poor mental health, crime and antisocial behaviour.
Since launching in 2012, the High Sheriff Youth Awards have awarded funding to more than 120 grassroots organisations, benefiting over 46,000 young people across the region.
Last year alone, 12 organisations shared £35,000 to support their work.
Dr Basu, who is also chief executive of Sedgefield-based technology firm Kromek Group, said: “During my installation as High Sheriff, I set out to focus on young people, employability and mental health services and the Giving Coalition brings together those who want to invest in the next generation by supporting the organisations already delivering this vital work in our communities.
“Every contribution, whether financial or through expertise and advocacy, will help those organisations continue creating opportunities for young people.”
The Giving Coalition has been established in response to growing demand on youth services and increasing pressure on charitable funding, creating a long-term network of businesses, trusts, charities and individuals committed to supporting young people across the region.
Michelle Cooper, chief executive at Point North, added: “We’re delighted to be working alongside Dr Basu throughout his shrieval year and to support his vision for the Giving Coalition.
“His ambition to bring together businesses, philanthropists and local partners behind a shared purpose is an exciting opportunity to strengthen support for grassroots organisations and the young people they champion.
“At Point North, we see every day the extraordinary impact that local groups have in our communities.
“By working together, we can help ensure more funding reaches the people making the biggest difference, creating stronger communities and more opportunities for young people across our region.”
