Giant Fleetwood portrait has Tommy down to a tee
A giant portrait of golfing star Tommy Fleetwood has appeared in Liverpool city centre to mark the start of The Open Championship.
The 1000sq metre artwork has been created on the grass at Chavasse Park, Liverpool ONE, celebrating the return of the world’s oldest golf tournament to Royal Birkdale.
Measuring 40 metres by 25 metres, the portrait of the Southport-born golfer took a team of three people two days to complete using specialist grass-marking paint.
The installation has been unveiled as thousands of golf fans prepare to descend on the Liverpool City Region for the 154th Open.
Royal Birkdale is hosting the championship this week for the 11th time, having last welcomed the tournament in 2017.
The Open was most recently held in the region at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake in 2023, when American golfer Brian Harman won the tournament.
The eye-catching display is believed to be the largest land art installation ever created in Liverpool city centre, putting local favourite Tommy firmly in the spotlight ahead of golf’s biggest week.
Brendan Hattam, centre director at Liverpool ONE, said: “As the region welcomes visitors not just from around the UK, but from across the world, we wanted to mark this special occasion with a supersized display of support and we think we’ve got Tommy’s image down to a tee.
“For eight days the eyes of the golfing world will be focussed on neighbouring Royal Birkdale and I know people across the region are both proud and excited to be celebrating The Open’s return.
“There’s going to be a real buzz around the city for what is one of the world’s greatest golf championships and we’re delighted to be playing a small part in the celebrations with our huge display of support.”
