School friends behind Yorkshire renewable energy firm target further expansion

Two Yorkshire school friends who set out to help households cut energy bills and reduce carbon emissions are targeting further expansion after building one of the region’s fastest-growing renewable energy installation firms.

Wakefield-based My Green Electricity has revealed ambitious plans for continued growth across Yorkshire and the North of England after a strong 2025, with demand increasing across solar PV, battery storage and complete home energy systems.

Founded by school friends Ed Bakes and Oscar Stansfield, the business was created from a shared belief that renewable energy would become an increasingly important part of everyday life and that customers deserved a more specialist, quality-led approach to installation.

Ed Bakes, Technical Director at My Green Electricity, said: “What started as conversations between two friends quickly became something much bigger.

“We could see energy costs increasing, technology improving and attitudes beginning to shift.

“We believed renewable energy would become central to how people power their homes in the future and wanted to build a business around helping people make that transition properly.

“From day one, our focus was never about volume. We wanted to create a business known for quality workmanship, strong customer relationships and delivering systems that genuinely perform long term.”

My Green Electricity combines more than 20 years of industry experience and supports homeowners and developers through the design, supply, installation, testing and certification of integrated renewable energy systems.

The business has now completed more than 500 integrated solar PV installations and developed specialist expertise across residential developments and new-build housing projects.

Alongside increased installation volumes, the company says customer referrals and repeat business have become one of its strongest indicators of success.

Oscar Stansfield, Operations Lead at My Green Electricity, said: “We’ve seen a noticeable shift in how customers think.

“A few years ago, renewable technology was often viewed as something future focused or environmentally led.

“Today, people are looking at solar, battery storage and EV charging as practical investments that give them greater control over energy usage and reduce long-term costs.

“Customers are also far more informed. They’re researching products, battery technology and energy management before they even speak to us, which means expectations are higher and conversations are more focused.”

Operating as an MCS and NAPIT-accredited installer, the business says 2025 has been its strongest year to date.

Growth has been driven by increased demand across Yorkshire and the wider North as homeowners and developers look for long-term energy savings, energy independence and more sustainable housing solutions.

Demand has been particularly strong for integrated systems that combine solar generation with battery storage and EV charging.

The business is also seeing increasing opportunities within the new-build sector, where developers are responding to changing regulations and growing buyer expectations around sustainability and energy efficiency.

In seeking to meet those expectations, My Green Electricity has developed specialist expertise delivering integrated solar solutions including Viridian and GSE systems across residential developments.

That experience, combined with a full end-to-end service model, has become a key differentiator.

Ed added: “We’re increasingly finding customers want a trusted partner who can manage the full journey.

“We handle everything from SAP-compliant design and specification through to installation, testing and certification. That gives customers confidence and removes complexity from what can otherwise feel like a complicated process.”

The company is also preparing to invest further in recruitment and training as demand continues to grow.

Plans include expanding installation and technical teams, strengthening design capability and growing partnerships across Yorkshire and the North.

The founders believe complete home energy systems will become one of the defining growth areas of the next decade and Oscar added: “The market is moving towards fully connected energy solutions that combine solar PV, battery storage, EV charging and smart energy management.

“Our ambition is to continue building My Green Electricity into one of the leading renewable energy installation specialists across Yorkshire and the North while staying true to what got us here in the first place — quality, reliability and doing the right thing for customers.”
