Engineering firm scoops award for family ethos

A Yorkshire engineering firm has been recognised for its family-led approach after winning Family Business of the Year at the North Yorkshire Business Awards.

Goole-based Salko UK received the accolade in recognition of its family ethos and multi-generational leadership.

Founded by Dean Murphy in 2000, the mechanical and electrical engineering business has remained family-owned for 25 years.

Dean’s daughter, Georgina Wilkinson, is now chief financial officer, while his son, Gary Murphy, leads the company’s electrical delivery operations.

Salko UK provides mechanical and electrical engineering services across the energy, commercial, industrial and mining sectors, working on projects including Woodsmith Mine and Enfield Power Station.

The regional award follows another success earlier this year, when the business was also named Family Business of the Year in HSBC’s Small Business Awards.

Dean said: “We’re pleased to have been recognised by a local awarding body for our commitment to family values.

“Our family ethos extends beyond our immediate family, fostering a work culture where employees feel valued and part of a larger family.

“This approach has enabled us to build a loyal and skilled workforce right here in Goole, providing stability and consistency through the ever-changing landscape of our industry.”
