500-home brewery redevelopment approved
The transformation of one of Sheffield’s industrial landmarks has moved a step closer after plans to redevelop the former Cannon Brewery site were approved.
Capital&Centric has secured planning permission to regenerate the 4.2-acre former Stones Brewery in Neepsend, creating a mixed-use neighbourhood with around 500 homes, commercial space and new public areas.
The first phase of the scheme will deliver 240 apartments, alongside the first elements of a wider masterplan that includes around 15,000sq ft of space for independent businesses, makers and creative enterprises.
Residents will also have access to a range of shared facilities, including a gym, co-working spaces, a lounge and a private cinema, while the development will introduce a new urban park, landscaped public spaces and pedestrian routes across a site that has been closed to the public for more than 20 years.
The regeneration aims to retain the site’s industrial heritage while creating a new destination that complements Neepsend's growing creative and cultural community.
Planning approval follows the recent opening of Club de Padel, Sheffield’s first indoor padel club, which has brought the first new use to the former brewery ahead of the wider redevelopment.
John Moffat, joint managing director at Capital&Centric, said: “Planning approval is a huge milestone for Cannon Brewery and another big moment for Neepsend.
“This place has been part of Sheffield’s story for generations and we are excited and proud to give it a new lease of life.
“With planning now secured, we are creating a new neighbourhood in one of Sheffield’s fastest-growing districts whilst celebrating heritage and history with hundreds of new homes, green-led public spaces, vibrant workspace and somewhere people can live, work and socialise.
“It's about taking an incredible piece of the city’s industrial heritage and making it relevant for the next generation.”
