Engineering firm wins accolade for bridge work

A Hull-based engineering specialist has received national recognition for its role in restoring one of the UK’s most historic bridges.

Spencer Bridge Engineering was named Bridge Project Team of the Year at the New Civil Engineering (NCE) Bridges Awards 2026 for its work restoring the Grade I-listed Menai Suspension Bridge, which opened in 1826 and remains the second-oldest suspension bridge in the world still carrying road traffic.

The company delivered a major hanger replacement programme on the 200-year-old crossing, which links mainland Wales with the Isle of Anglesey and carries around 46,000 vehicles each day.

Working for UK Highways A55 Ltd, Spencer Bridge Engineering replaced and painted 168 wire rope hangers, restoring the bridge's structural integrity while removing a critical safety risk.

The project required the team to design bespoke equipment to remove and replace the hangers while protecting the historic structure.

Work was completed alongside live traffic and within the constraints of listed building consent and the exposed coastal environment.

Anchor rods and other key components were also upgraded, with connections sealed and coated to improve long-term durability.

The project was delivered in collaboration with permanent works designer COWI UK, hanger supplier Fatzer AG and a number of specialist manufacturers involved in the planning, testing and delivery of the scheme.
