Historic dam's future safeguarded after repairs

A restoration project has secured the future of one of Sheffield’s most important industrial heritage sites.

Bowburn-headquartered Esh Construction has completed a £1.3 million programme of repairs to Abbeydale Dam at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, helping safeguard the 18th-century structure for future generations.

Delivered on behalf of Sheffield City Council in partnership with Sheffield Museums Trust, the scheme addressed significant structural issues after leaks developed within the dam, allowing water to escape and placing pressure on the historic stonework.

Temporary measures had been introduced in 2021, but a permanent solution was needed to protect both the dam and the wider Scheduled Monument.

Working within the constraints of a nationally significant heritage site, Esh carried out a series of specialist repairs, including rebuilding and repointing displaced stone walls using traditional stonemasonry techniques, installing clay linings and waterproof membranes to prevent future leaks, and grouting weakened sections of the structure to improve stability.

The project also involved repairs and underpinning to the Hamlet forge walls, the installation of a new concrete base, and the reconstruction of sections of the dam wall using traditional lime mortar, puddle clay and a Bentonite membrane.

To enable the work, a temporary causeway was built across the reservoir, creating a safe working platform while carefully managing water levels and protecting the surrounding environment.

“Working within a site of such historical importance required a sensitive approach, combining modern engineering expertise with traditional conservation techniques to ensure the dam’s future while preserving its heritage value.

“Close collaboration between Sheffield City Council, Sheffield Museums Trust, Historic England, our design partners and specialist supply chain has been critical throughout the project. 

“Together, we have delivered a solution that safeguards this important landmark and protects a unique part of Sheffield’s industrial history for future generations to enjoy.”

All works were undertaken under the guidance of Historic England and in accordance with Environment Agency permits, with extensive planning and site investigations ensuring the restoration balanced engineering requirements with the site’s historic significance.

The completed project restores a vital part of the water management system that once powered Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, recognised as the most complete surviving example of an integrated water-powered industrial works.

It has also been delivered alongside Sheffield Museums’ wider Embrace Abbeydale programme, supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, which is improving access and visitor facilities across the historic site.
