'Future defining' carbon scheme hits milestone

A green industrial venture has hit an operational milestone.

Northern Endurance Partnership has launched its offshore construction campaign.

Bosses say the move officially kickstarts work on “the UK’s first carbon dioxide transport and storage network”.

They add the project – which is earmarked to transport and store up to 23 million tonnes of industrial emissions from Teesside and the Humber under the North Sea each year – represents a “once-in-a-generation project to redefine the future”.

The work is being overseen by engineer Saipem and PD Ports, with the latter’s Port of Hartlepool serving as a storage base for the endeavour.

The site will host materials including 12,000 concrete-coated linepipe joints, with officials revealing more than 60 per cent of the apparatus has been made at the nearby Corinth Pipeworks mill.

Rich Denny, Northern Endurance Partnership managing director, said: “Seeing the first pipes arrive in Hartlepool is a huge milestone and a clear sign construction of this nationally significant project is underway.

“The infrastructure we are building will enable industries across Teesside and the Humber to reduce emissions while continuing to grow, invest and create jobs.”

Roberto Pellegrini, Saipem UK managing director, said: “We are proud to bring our offshore engineering and construction expertise to a project that will play a key role in the decarbonisation of UK industry.”

Paul Foreman, PD Ports’ chief operating officer, who will take over as the operator’s chief executive on September 1, added: “We are proud to play a role as a key enabler in the project.

“Ongoing investment in our infrastructure and skilled workforce means we stand ready to support transformational projects of this scale, not just as a logistics provider, but as a long-term partner committed to our region’s growth.”
