Consultation launched on 'vital' town road revamp

A regeneration body has launched a transport project consultation.

Tees Valley Combined Authority is asking residents, businesses and stakeholders to have their say on a proposed new Darlington link road.

Officials say the mooted scheme would provide a “vital link” between the A66 and A1(M).

They add the consultation process features alternatives including a so-called ‘do minimum option’, which is based around a new four-kilometre single carriageway route with potential to remove nearly 11,000 vehicles daily from residential roads.

A second blueprint, described as a ‘more ambitious option’, includes a six-and-a-half-kilometre route complete with new crossings over the River Skerne and East Coast Main Line.

A third proposal, titled ‘even more ambitious options’, covers a combination of additional routes and connections.

The consultation process is set to run until September 25, with people able to take part here or by attending a soon-to-be-announced programme of events.

Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen said: “Darlington’s road network plays a crucial role in connecting people to jobs, education and opportunities, but we know there are longstanding challenges that need to be addressed.

“This consultation is an important opportunity for residents, businesses and road users to tell us what they think.

“No decisions have been made; it’s vital people take part and help shape the future of transport in and around the town.”
