Builder races to finish new city ambulance station

A construction firm is racing towards completing a multi-million-pound emergency response base. 

Hobson & Porter is building a new Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust station in Hull.

Bosses say the hub will unite staff from sites in Hull East, Hull West, Sutton Fields and Hamburg Road.

They add the station – formerly used as a warehouse off the city’s Clough Road – will house a fleet workshop, a non-emergency patient transport service and provide staff training space.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust has invested £6 million in the project, with Hobson & Porter’s contract worth £2.8 million. 

Construction is earmarked for completion “in the coming weeks”, with Hull-headquartered Hobson & Porter overseeing work including ceiling and partition wall installation, flooring, kitchen units, internal doors, glazing, decorating and mechanical and electrical services.

Mark Tomlinson, Hobson & Porter senior construction manager, said: “We’re very proud to be working on our first project for Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust.

“We started work at the beginning of January and are now entering the final stages, with more than 60 members of our team and subcontractors on site as we approach handover. 

“This is an exciting milestone; we all understand how important this facility will be for Hull and how it will contribute to saving lives.”

Glen Adams, Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust associate director of fleet and estates, added: “Having our team in one central location will deliver a wide range of operational improvements, including scheduling, vehicle availability and recruitment. 

“A new station also supports our staff, who have very challenging roles. 

“The improvements delivered by this new station will support their health and wellbeing, and will ultimately ensure we are better positioned to deliver improved patient care.”
