Former teacher swaps classroom for centre stage

A former Gateshead teacher has built a growing entertainment business after swapping the classroom for a career creating live performances at events across the UK.

Rebecca Matthews, founder of Rebel Event Entertainment, provides bespoke entertainment for weddings, corporate events, festivals, birthday celebrations and public gatherings.

Based in the North East, the business offers a wide range of performances, including fire artists, stilt walkers, mirror performers, disco ball dancers and themed character entertainers, with its performers travelling nationwide.

Rebecca’s career in performance began at the age of three through dance before she qualified as a secondary school PE and dance teacher.

After spending a decade in education, she decided to pursue her passion full-time by launching Rebel Event Entertainment.

Rebecca said: “We specialise in creating unique entertainment experiences that people remember long after the event is over. 

“Whether it’s a wedding, a corporate event or a large arena show, we love bringing something different and exciting that really captures people's attention.

“Our performers dance, interact with guests, pose for photographs and create amazing moments. 

“The mirror performers and disco ball dancers are always a huge hit too. 

“People often have to do a double take when they see them.”

Today, the company employs a team of around 12 performers, many of whom Rebecca has personally trained in specialist disciplines such as stilt walking and fire performance.

She also works to provide opportunities for young performers looking to gain experience within the events industry.

Rebecca added: “Teaching and performing actually have a lot in common. 

“As a teacher you’re standing in front of people every day, engaging them and capturing their attention. 

“I’ve simply taken those skills and applied them in a different environment.

“Many of the people who work with us are studying performing arts at college or university. 

“It gives them a real insight into the industry and the opportunity to gain experience working as professional performers.”

Recent appearances have included the Motorcycle Show at Newcastle’s Utilita Arena, where the team delivered fire performances and arena entertainment for visitors.

As demand continues to grow, Rebecca is focused on expanding the business while developing new acts and supporting the next generation of performers, with the aim of bringing distinctive live entertainment to events across the UK.

She added: “We’re going bigger, bolder and better. 

“We’re investing in more elaborate productions, expanding further afield and creating even more spectacular experiences. 

“If you see a stilt walker at an event, I want it to be one of our team.”
