Council bids to bridge gap with £21 million boost

A local authority has unveiled a £21 million transport improvement plan.

South Tyneside Council has bid for Government cash to replace Heugh Street Bridge.

Bosses say rebuilding the South Shields crossing – closed to vehicular traffic since November last year due to structural issues – will improve thousands of journeys every day.

The council has applied for Department for Transport Structures Fund support to replace the bridge.

A decision on the bid is expected later this year.

Councillor Paul Mackings, leader of South Tyneside Council, said: “We know how important Heugh Street Bridge is to residents, businesses and everyone who relies on this route.

“This bid is a significant step towards securing the investment needed to provide a long-term solution.

“A full replacement would ensure the route can continue to serve the community for many years to come.”
