Popular café reopens under new ownership

A popular Derbyshire café has reopened under new ownership as a growing hospitality group continues its expansion across the region.

Scrannery has taken over The Café at Libby's in Brampton, relaunching the venue as Mary’s Yard while retaining the team that has served local customers for almost two decades.

The opening marks Sheffield-based Scrannery’s third new venue of 2026, following the launches of Discovery at Sheffield’s Pennine Five campus and Nook & Scran at Chesterfield Library.

Bosses say the new-look café will build on Libby's long-standing reputation within the community, combining a refreshed food and drink offering with the welcoming atmosphere that made the venue a local favourite.

Rather than replacing the business that came before, Scrannery says it aims to preserve the café's character while gradually introducing its own approach to food, coffee and hospitality.

Dave King, co-founder of Scrannery, said: “Brampton already has something special in this café, and our job is to look after it. 

“We’re not here to tear up what people love — the good coffee, brilliant menu, and friendly faces — we’re here to build on it and bring what has made Scrannery stand out to Brampton.

“Becoming the next custodian of an established community space is a different kind of challenge to opening somewhere brand new, and it’s one we’re taking real care to get right.”

The new name pays tribute to Mary Smith, a pioneering 19th-century local brewer whose brewery once stood nearby at Brewery Yard.

Like Nook & Scran, Mary’s Yard will serve speciality coffee from Redemption Roasters, the social enterprise that provides training and employment opportunities for people leaving prison and those at risk of offending

Kieran Morgan-McGeehan, co-founder of Scrannery, added: “Mary’s Yard feels like a natural next step for us in Derbyshire. 

“We want it to feel as though it has always belonged to Brampton.

“Choosing a name rooted in Mary Smith’s story, working with local suppliers and continuing our partnership with Redemption Roasters are all part of making sure the café has a positive impact well beyond food and drink.”
