Exhibition celebrates Ukraine’s independence

A new exhibition in Newcastle is bringing together history, art and community voices to explore Ukraine’s journey towards independence.

Ukraine’s Independence will run at Newcastle City Library from August 20 to September 4, marking Ukraine’s Independence Day and examining themes of freedom, democracy, national identity and resilience.

Organised by the Ukrainian Community Group in the North East, the free exhibition has been developed alongside the Ukrainian Society at Northumbria University and Ukrainian artists living in the region.

Students from the university society have researched and developed a historical display featuring documents, photographs, maps and key milestones tracing Ukraine’s centuries-long path towards independence.

Alongside the historical material, original works by artists Tetiana Berezitska, Anastasia Maistrenko and Raisa Babych will explore Ukraine’s past and present through painting, participatory art and documentary film.

Their work examines themes including memory, identity, displacement, remembrance, resilience and hope, while highlighting the role creativity can play in preserving cultural heritage and connecting communities.

Tetiana said: “This exhibition tells two stories.

“One is the story of Ukraine’s long struggle for independence.

“The other is the story of Ukrainians who, despite war, loss, and displacement, continue to create.

“Art cannot erase pain, but it can preserve memory, strengthen communities, and remind us that hope and creativity endure even in the most difficult circumstances.

“Through this exhibition, we want visitors to see the resilience, humanity, and creative spirit that continue to define Ukrainians today.”

Organisers say the exhibition aims to provide visitors from all backgrounds with an opportunity to learn more about Ukraine’s history while encouraging dialogue and understanding through contemporary art and community participation.

Iryna Orshak, chair of the Ukrainian Community Group in the North East, added: “The Ukraine’s Independence exhibition is more than an art showcase. 

“It is a symbol of the unity of the Ukrainian community in the United Kingdom, our ability to preserve our identity, support one another, and share the truth about Ukraine through culture. 

“At a time when Ukrainians continue to fight for their freedom, art becomes a universal language that brings people together across borders. 

“We hope this exhibition will serve as a place for connection, dialogue, and a reminder that independence is a precious value – one that must be protected and defended.”

Ukraine’s Independence is free to attend and open to the public throughout its run.
