Derelict site set for new council homes

Wakefield Council has granted planning permission for the redevelopment of land on George Street in Featherstone, just off the town’s high street.

The site has been acquired by Yorkshire-based property developer Nicholson & Co, which will deliver four one-bedroom apartments for use as council housing.

Each home will feature a bedroom and open-plan kitchen and living area, with the wider scheme including eight parking spaces, electric vehicle charging points, waste and recycling storage and landscaped outdoor areas.

Traditional red and orange Yorkshire clay brickwork will be used to help the development complement neighbouring George Street terraces.

Construction is expected to begin in January 2027, with completion targeted for July, subject to weather and construction conditions.

Nicholson & Co is a family-run property development and investment company led by local entrepreneur Grant Nicholson and his father, Andy Nicholson.

The company specialises in transforming underused land and buildings into residential and commercial developments across Yorkshire.
