Historic Hull building set for £5.5 million revamp

A city centre building in Hull is undergoing a £5.5 million transformation ahead of welcoming hundreds of council employees next year.

Hull-headquartered construction company Hobson & Porter is carrying out the redevelopment of the four-storey Treasury Building on Guildhall Road, with completion expected next summer.

The project, which is being partly funded through the Government’s Salix fund, will modernise the building and improve its energy efficiency.

Work includes the installation of new windows, heating and cooling systems, energy-efficient lighting and photovoltaic panels, alongside improvements to the building’s exterior.

New internal walls will also create meeting rooms and private working spaces.

Wayne Cropp, contracts manager at Hobson & Porter, said: “Since the Treasury Building was built in 1987, modern construction standards and sustainability requirements have evolved considerably.

“This scheme is designed to respect the site’s heritage and contribution to Hull’s Old Town Conservation Area, whilst significantly transforming and future-proofing it for the next generation. 

“Crucially, it will also create an effective and modern working environment for a range of Hull City Council’s key departments.

“We now have a 30-strong team working on site, alongside our trusted local supply chain who are providing their expertise in a wide range of critical areas.

“This development also follows our successful restoration of the neighbouring Grade II* listed Guildhall, which we completed in 2023, so we’re particularly pleased to be working on another landmark project in this part of the city.” 

Once complete, the Treasury Building will accommodate up to 500 Hull City Council employees from its corporate, IT and finance teams.

Staff will relocate from the Maritime Buildings on Alfred Gelder Street, which the council says is no longer an efficient operating base.

Councillor Sarita Robinson, portfolio holder for corporate services at Hull City Council, added: “The council is delighted that work is well underway to transforming the Treasury Building.

“Not only does it bring back into use an empty building, but it is also being done so in an energy efficient way which will help to meet the council’s carbon neutral ambitions.”
