Record office in running for national accolade

A Northumberland heritage organisation has been shortlisted for a national award celebrating the stories of ordinary people.

Berwick Record Office, part of Northumberland Archives, is among 24 sites across England in the running for the ‘Everyday History Heroes’ award, organised through a partnership between Heritage Open Days and Findmypast.

It is one of two Northumberland sites shortlisted alongside Cragend Farm.

The award recognises historic and cultural organisations that bring grassroots history to life, highlighting the contributions of people and communities whose stories can often go untold.

Berwick Record Office has been recognised for its work with Heritage Open Days, including guided walks, exhibitions and helping coordinate more than 100 events across the town this year.

Its archives explore the lives of people who have shaped Berwick over generations, from fishermen and police officers to criminals and other local residents.

Officials say the work helps visitors and communities better understand the people, industries and events that have influenced the town’s development.

Linda Bankier, senior archivist at Berwick Record Office, said: “Berwick Record Office is passionate about helping people find out about their family history.

“Our walks and many other events we run throughout Heritage Open Days bring the everyday stories of people to life.

“People make history.

“Through our archives, exhibitions and events, we are proud to help people discover the everyday stories that have shaped Berwick and its unique heritage.”

Councillor Wendy Pattison, cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism at Northumberland County Council, added: “Being shortlisted for a national award is a fantastic achievement for Berwick Record Office and everyone involved in delivering Heritage Open Days across the town.

“The team works tirelessly to make local history accessible, engaging and relevant, bringing the stories of ordinary people to life through walks, exhibitions and events.

“I would encourage everyone to support Berwick Record office by casting their vote and helping showcase Berwick's rich heritage on the national stage.”

The winner will be decided through a public vote, which is open until August 31.

The successful site will receive £1000 to support future heritage activities and events, helping further share local stories with residents and visitors.
