Sweet shop hopes to taste success on Dragons’ Den
A South Shields sweet shop is hoping to taste investment success when its owners step into the Dragons’ Den.
Mr Swainston’s, based on Fowler Street, will feature on the BBC One programme on August 20, with owners John Gray and Sean Robinson pitching their business to the Dragons.
The pair will share the story behind the traditional sweet shop as they seek investment to support its growth, while representing South Shields and the wider North East on national television.
Launched in 2024, Mr Swainston’s aims to recreate the traditional British sweet shop experience through a nostalgic range of confectionery and old-fashioned customer service.
The shop has built a following through its theatrical approach to customer service and focus on bringing families together through memories associated with traditional sweets.
John said: “We are incredibly proud to represent South Shields on national television.
“Our traditional sweet shop has been incredibly popular, both in store and online, so to be able to share our story with a national audience is amazing.”
Sean added: “We have always believed that Mr Swainston’s is about reigniting memories and bringing families together through traditions.
“We can’t wait for the UK to discuss their favourite sweet during our pitch.”
Viewers will discover whether John and Sean can persuade the Dragons to invest when their episode airs at 8pm on Thursday, August 20, on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
