New scheme aims to shine light on solar savings
A new group-buying scheme is aiming to help North East homeowners take greater control of their energy costs by making solar technology more accessible.
North East mayor Kim McGuinness has launched the initiative through the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority, in partnership with Switch Together.
The scheme uses collective buying power to secure competitive offers for solar panels and battery storage from vetted installers.
It will help residents understand whether renewable energy technology is suitable for their property while supporting efforts to cut carbon emissions across the region.
Mayor McGuinness said: “We must do what we can to help people cut their energy bills.
“This will give homeowners practical ways to reduce their bills and make their homes more energy efficient.
“As we work to build a greener, fairer North East, we want to improve lives for everyone in our region by helping local people take advantage of technologies that can cut carbon emissions while putting more money back into their pockets.”
George Frost, from Switch Together, added: “We are here for the people who think they might want to install solar panels but are deterred by the perceived complexity.
“Joining the group is an easy way to help households make an informed decision on an installation and so far we have helped almost 50,000 households install with solar to generate their own electricity.”
Residents who register will receive personalised information and guidance, with no obligation to accept an offer or proceed with installation.
Registration is free and remains open until September 27.
