Why more website traffic is not always the answer for B2B firms

When a B2B website is not producing enough enquiries or leads, the first instinct is often to look for more visibility. More traffic. More paid ads. More social media activity. More people landing on the site. Whilst this can bring in more people, it doesn’t mean more people will take action.

Another instinct is to adjust the page, headlines, copy or call-to-action buttons.

However, this too does not mean the real issue may be solved. Often, the page may be clear and compelling to the business, but the offer may be unclear or leave unanswered questions to an outsider seeing it for the first time.

Alpha P Tech recently researched more than 100 public discussions alongside insights from 14 years of website copywriting projects and found these issues to be recurring patterns.

In many cases, the issue was not the design or the offer itself, but the way the page builds clarity, trust, and encourages action.

With buyers increasingly using search, AI tools, reviews, and peer recommendations to compare options before speaking to a supplier, websites now have to work harder to answer questions early on.

Websites need to make sure they’re speaking to the right people at the right time.

This means understanding whether your visitors are exploring a broad topic, diagnosing a problem or looking for specific solutions, and ensuring the page is structured to answer their questions and help them take the next step.

Businesses were concerned about whether their page felt distinct enough.

Alexandros Papantoniou, Alpha P Tech’s founder, said: “With the rise in website builders and AI tools, many businesses wonder whether their website or landing page feels AI-generated, generic or templated.

“The issue is less about the copywriting or word choice alone, and more about the substance behind the message.”

One of the most frequent requests in the discussions was for outside feedback.

When teams (SaaS, technical products and specialist B2B services in particular) rework their site over time, they can end up too close to the page to see a first-time visitor’s perspective.

Whilst this isn’t easy for many firms, taking a step back to review the page and any ads driving traffic from a first-time visitor’s perspective is a useful way to start.

Getting outside feedback can also be invaluable for teams and business owners, helping them see what they may be overlooking.

A fuller breakdown is available in Alpha P Tech’s guide to the real reasons website and landing page performance falls short.
