Coastal protection schemes near completion
Two Northumberland communities are being better protected from coastal erosion and storm damage as work on defence schemes nears completion.
Northumberland County Council has delivered projects at Cresswell and Beadnell aimed at safeguarding villages and key roads from wave action.
At Cresswell, work to stabilise the slope beside the coastal road near Golden Sands Holiday Park is now complete.
The project has included installing new rock armour along the shoreline and carrying out repairs and improvements to roadside drainage.
Meanwhile, work at Beadnell remains on schedule, with 195 metres of existing seawall along Harbour Road being repaired and strengthened.
The route provides access through the village to the harbour, beach and caravan parks, as well as more than 200 homes.
Around 125 metres of the landward parapet wall has also been carefully dismantled and repaired, alongside repointing and strengthening work.
Temporary traffic management will remain in place until the Beadnell scheme is fully completed.
Councillor John Riddle, cabinet member for rural and environment at Northumberland County Council, said: “I am pleased to see these schemes near completion which will bring many benefits to our coastal communities.
“It is crucial we protect our beautiful coastal villages for both residents and visitors to enjoy for years to come.
“These schemes have been carefully planned to minimise impacts on the shoreline and wildlife while maintaining public access.
“We appreciate this can be a busy time for our coastal areas and would like to thank the public for their patience while the works have been taking place.”
