Crewe BID continues town centre clean-up

Crewe Business Improvement District (BID) has completed the latest phase of its enhanced cleaning programme, with Town Square and the area surrounding the newly opened Meanwhile Space among the latest locations to benefit.

Professional cleaning teams have removed built-up dirt from paved areas, improving the appearance of one of the town centre’s key locations as more people begin to use and enjoy the new public space.

The work has been organised and fully funded by Crewe BID as part of its ongoing investment in creating a cleaner and more welcoming environment for businesses, residents and visitors.

Enhanced street cleansing and environmental improvements were among the priorities identified by businesses during the development of Crewe BID, forming part of its Cleaner, Greener, Safer programme. More than 70% of businesses responding to the original BID consultation said investment in areas including street cleansing was important or very important.

Rose Horner, Crewe BID Manager, said: “This is exactly the type of practical improvement businesses told us they wanted to see when Crewe BID was established, and the difference the latest cleaning has made is immediately noticeable.

“With the new Meanwhile Space now open, we wanted to make sure the surrounding area looked clean and welcoming too. These are improvements people can see as they walk through the town centre, and they all contribute to making Crewe a better place to visit, work and do business.”

The latest work follows previous phases of enhanced cleaning funded by Crewe BID along Nantwich Road, including around the Mill Street and Ruskin Road junctions. 

This included steam cleaning pavements, removing chewing gum, cleaning tree pits and repainting street furniture, targeting busy areas used every day by businesses, residents and visitors.

Graham Saunders, Chair of Crewe BID and General Manager of South Cheshire Glass, said: “For local businesses, how Crewe looks and feels matters. This is one of the reasons businesses backed the BID and it is good to see that investment translating into visible improvements across different parts of Crewe.

“Cleaning might sound like a small thing, but when you are running a business here every day, improvements to the environment around you make a big difference. We want people to feel positive about coming into Crewe, spending time here and supporting our shops, cafes and other businesses.”

The latest cleaning coincides with the opening of the new Meanwhile Space on the former Royal Arcade site in Crewe town centre, which has been backed by the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

The new space includes green areas and picnic tables, a children’s play area with a circular swing and a new footpath connecting the bus station and car park with Queensway and Victoria Street.

Naomi Kirkwood, a member of staff at Waterstones, said: “I think it looks lovely. It’s a lot cleaner and feels fresh. They have managed to get rid of a lot of the dirt, which has made the area look much brighter.”

The enhanced cleaning programme forms part of wider work being delivered by Crewe BID for its levy-paying businesses, including projects to promote Crewe, increase visits and footfall, improve the town centre environment and support businesses across the BID area.
