Siemens Energy powers on with Rolls-Royce deal

An engineering firm has added fresh thrust to its order book with a power sector deal.

Siemens Energy is set to make steam turbine components for Rolls-Royce SMR small modular reactors.

Bosses say the apparatus will be used on the Anglesey-based Gwyndod nuclear plant project and support more than 550 jobs.

They add parts including high-pressure turbines and valve casings will be made at Siemens Energy’s CA Parsons Works Newcastle site, revealing the contract marks the first time such components will be produced for a small modular reactor anywhere in Europe.

Darren Davidson, Siemens Energy UK vice president, said: “This is a significant moment for Siemens Energy and our Newcastle facility, for UK manufacturing and for Britain’s nuclear future. 

“Building on a site with a world-class engineering legacy, we're preparing to manufacture the next generation of steam turbines for small modular reactors, supporting energy security, creating skilled jobs and helping power the UK’s future energy mix.”

He added the company’s Newcastle base – whose history includes building the steam turbine for the Calder Hall nuclear power station in West Cumbria – is also set to become a component service hub for the Rolls-Royce SMR UK fleet.
