Powerleague serves up padel expansion

A Gateshead sports venue is serving up a £1.1 million expansion with five new padel courts as it responds to growing demand for the sport.

Small-sided football and multi-sport operator Powerleague will open the canopied courts at its existing Gateshead club on September 10, adding padel alongside its established football offer.

The investment, first announced in May, will also see the venue introduce a Target Darts lane following a further investment of around £8000.

Gateshead becomes Powerleague’s 11th UK club to introduce padel, taking its portfolio to 47 courts as the operator looks to make the fast-growing sport accessible to more communities.

A launch event will take place on September 26, featuring padel taster sessions, tournaments for players of all abilities, live music, giveaways and food and drink.

John Gillespie, chief executive of Powerleague, said: “Padel is one of the fastest-growing sports in the UK, and bringing it to Gateshead marks an important step in expanding access to the game nationwide.

“Backed by a £1.1 million investment, we’re transforming our existing site to create more opportunities for the Gateshead community to get active.

“We’re excited to welcome both newcomers trying padel for the first time and more experienced players to enjoy everything the Gateshead club has to offer, and hope as many people as possible come down for our community open day.”
