New plan to preserve iconic Durham landmark

A new plan has been completed to help protect and preserve one of County Durham’s most recognisable landmarks for future generations.

Durham County Council’s Cabinet is set to be updated on the new World Heritage Site Management Plan for Durham Castle and Cathedral next week, when members will be asked to endorse its vision and objectives.

The castle and cathedral became the UK’s first cultural heritage site to be included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1986.

The refreshed plan sets out how the site will be conserved, shared and regenerated, with its objectives centred around four themes of conservation, sharing, regeneration and research.

It has been produced by the World Heritage Site manager with support from the council and overseen by the World Heritage Site Strategic Partnership Board, following public consultation.

Once adopted, the plan will also inform the review of the County Durham Plan and support wider regeneration and tourism strategies, including the Durham City Strategic Places Plan and County Durham Vision 2035.

Councillor Karen Allison, Durham County Council cabinet member for leisure, tourism, regeneration, high street, said: “This new WHS Management Plan is vital for ensuring that the beautiful Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral continue to be protected and preserved for future generations to enjoy in years to come.

“Extensive consultation has been undertaken during the development of the latest version of the plan to make sure it reflects what matters most to residents, communities and visitors.

“We’re proud of the role we are playing in conserving this iconic landmark.”
