Storage firm revives historic glassworks site

A historic Newcastle industrial site is being brought back into commercial use through a £4 million investment in a new self-storage facility.

Pink Storage is developing its 26th UK location on 2.2 acres of the former Lemington Glassworks site on Lemington Road, strengthening the company’s presence in the North East.

The development will provide 380 drive-up storage containers, creating 60,800sq ft of storage space for households and businesses.

Customers will be able to book units online and receive immediate access through a unique PIN code, while automatic number plate recognition will allow them to drive directly to their container.

The purpose-built facility will also feature 24-hour CCTV monitoring and individually secured units.

Bosses say the investment will provide modern storage facilities while returning part of the former glassworks to productive commercial use and supporting the wider regeneration of the area.

Scott Evans, chief executive of Pink Storage, said: “Our £4 million investment in Lemington is a significant commitment for Pink Storage and reflects the continued demand for convenient, secure storage in the North East.



“The 2.2-acre development gives us a strong presence in Newcastle and allows us to provide substantial additional storage capacity for local residents and businesses.



“Bringing part of the former Lemington Glassworks back into productive use is particularly rewarding given its connection to Newcastle’s industrial heritage.

Lemington Glassworks opened in 1899 and operated for more than 80 years before closing in 1985.

The historic works were the last operating glassworks of their kind in the UK.
