RMT appoints corporate finance executive

Gosforth-headquartered RMT Accountants & Business Advisors has appointed Matthew Weightman as corporate finance executive, adding more than 15 years of international finance experience to its team.

Originally from north Northumberland, Matthew returns to the North East following a career that has taken him from Seahouses to Switzerland, Brazil and London.

He began his career on HSBC’s international graduate programme after completing a degree in French, German and international business at Aston University.

Matthew went on to hold private and corporate banking positions before spending more than seven years as a corporate banking relationship manager in Zurich.

During that time, he worked with a range of Swiss businesses on their international funding and banking requirements.

He also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and an executive MBA from IESE Business School in Munich.

Matthew said: “When I decided it was time to come home, I looked at a range of career options across the North East and was attracted by the extent of the strategic investment that RMT and Sumer are making in the business’ capabilities, as well as the group’s focussed mission of championing the owner managed SMEs that are at the heart of the regional economy.

“I’m immensely proud to have grown up in this region, helping my grandfather and uncle during school holidays in the family business, and that appreciation has grown even stronger over the years that I have been away. 

“My personal mission is therefore very much aligned with RMT and Sumer in wanting to help SMEs in the region grow or successfully manage a succession via expert strategic advice and strong relationships, all of which is backed up by national capabilities and sector expertise. 

“I have a keen interest in both the operational and the human sides of the role, and in supporting business owners with some of the most important events and transactions of their lifetime. 

“Building a detailed understanding of both elements will ensure I can help each business owner achieve their personal and commercial objectives.

“A great deal of the experience and knowledge I’ve built up through my career is directly relevant to the challenges and opportunities that North East business owners face every day, and my focus is on using it to help our clients make the right decisions for their businesses and themselves.

“Being part of the RMT team has already surpassed my expectations and I’m already working on a range of interesting M&A and finance raising projects that demonstrate the vitality and ambition of the North East SME economy.”

Matthew’s appointment adds further experience to RMT’s corporate finance team as the firm continues to support businesses with their funding, growth and wider financial requirements.

The firm, part of Sumer Group, provides financial and business advisory services through specialist accountancy, tax, medical and healthcare, corporate finance and restructuring teams.
