The Durham Ox, in Crayke near York

Funding helps historic inn raise the bar

A historic North Yorkshire country inn has invested more than £500,000 in its visitor offering as it targets further growth and £3 million turnover.

The Durham Ox, in Crayke near York, has completed its latest refurbishment with support from a £580,000 commercial funding package from Lloyds.

The 300-year-old pub, restaurant and country inn has been owned by the Ibbotson family since 1999 and has developed into a destination for food, drink, weddings and rural breaks.

Its latest improvements include a new wine cellar, dedicated welcome desk, hot-desk office space and upgraded table-management facilities, creating additional capacity while retaining the venue’s traditional character.

The investment follows the addition of two flagship pool suites, which increased its accommodation offering to nine rooms.

Featuring private terraces, minibars, outdoor pools and views across the North Yorkshire countryside, the suites are designed to strengthen its appeal to staycation, wedding and celebration guests.

Mike Ibbotson, owner of The Durham Ox, which currently employs around 50 people, said: “We’ve always wanted The Durham Ox to be a proper village inn, somewhere you can eat, drink and sleep, and to keep improving what we offer without losing the character of the place.

“The changes we’ve made are about making the experience better for guests and more efficient for the team, especially at busy times.

“Lloyds has supported us through a long-standing relationship, and that backing has helped us invest for the long term.”

Alexandra King, relationship manager at Lloyds, added: “The Durham Ox has built a brilliant reputation over many years by focusing on quality and investing carefully in the guest experience.

“We’re proud to support Mike, Sasha and the team strengthen the business and continue investing in a destination that plays an important role in the local visitor economy.”
