Investment drives junction safety improvements

A junction in County Durham has undergone safety and accessibility improvements as part of a £2.94 million investment programme.

Durham County Council has completed work at St John’s Road Junction in Meadowfield, aimed at easing traffic and improving journeys for pedestrians and cyclists.

New signals have been installed to help traffic turning right onto the A690a, alongside crossing facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair and scooter users travelling to and from Meadowfield Industrial Estate.

The scheme forms part of improvements along the A690 corridor between Crook and Neville’s Cross, funded through £2.94 million awarded to the council from the Department for Transport’s Safer Roads Fund.

Elements overlapping with wider transport projects were funded through the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority’s Bus Service Improvement Plan.

Councillor Tim McGuinness, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for rural, farming and transport, said: “We’re pleased to announce that these works are now complete, improving safety for residents crossing at the junction.

“They will also offer better connectivity, and support more sustainable travel choices, helping communities and businesses feel more connected.

“These improvements are just one of a range of upgrades to the A690 that we have undertaken over the last year, and we’d like to thank residents for their patience while works have been carried out.”
