Treatment works investment benefits the local environment and economy

A £2.2 million investment to strengthen wastewater treatment in East Cleveland is entering its second phase.

Northumbrian Water is carrying out proactive maintenance and upgrades at Marske Sewage Treatment Works. The water company is using regional suppliers and subcontractors, led by Washington-based United Infrastructure, to carry out the work.

This includes the cleaning, inspection and refurbishment of key treatment tanks, alongside the renewal of aeration pipework and diffusers. The investment will improve the site's resilience and help ensure treated water continues to meet strict environmental standards before being returned to the environment.

Two of the site's four large treatment tanks, known as Sequence Batch Reactors (SBRs), have already been replaced, with work on the third tank due to start in the next few months. All four tanks are expected to be completed by the end of March 2027.

SBRs play a key role in the wastewater treatment process, and the renewal of critical components, including aeration pipework and associated diffusers, will help improve efficiency, resilience and regulatory compliance at the site.

The new pipework is being manufactured by Middlesbrough-based Donoghue Tees Valley Engineering, while Redmarshall-based Mantank Environmental Services is carrying out cleaning and tankering work. Earlier phases of the project were delivered by Washington firm Gowland & Dawson.

Northumbrian Water Project Manager Glen Campbell said: "This is a significant investment that will help ensure Marske Sewage Treatment Works continues to operate reliably and maintain the high environmental standards expected of us.

"We're also proud to be working with our local supply chain on this work, supporting local jobs and skills while delivering essential improvements to our assets. It reflects our commitment to the regional economy and our ambition for 60p of every £1 we spend to remain within the region."
