Masonry firm stacks up work with chimney deal

A brickwork contractor has added another course to its order book with a landmark property project.

Classic Masonry is working on the Grade I-listed Cragside House.

Created by industrialist William Armstrong and his wife Margaret, the Victorian building – based in Rothbury, Northumberland – was the first house in the world to be lit using hydroelectricity.

Bosses say North Shields-based Classic Masonry will conserve the historic building’s chimney stacks, with its remit covering stone cleaning, repointing, indenting and flue repairs.

The works form part of wider roofing renovations at the National Trust property, which are being overseen by Cramlington-based Datim Building Contractors.

Mike Moody, Classic Masonry managing director, said: “Cragside is one of Britain’s most significant Victorian country houses, and projects of this nature demand the very highest standards of heritage craftsmanship.

“Every aspect of the work has been carefully planned, with traditional materials and techniques essential to ensuring the building’s historic character is preserved.

“We’re pleased to be working on a project that will help safeguard this remarkable building for generations to come.”

The work follows Classic Masonry being appointed to support the renovation of South Shields’ Grade II-listed 16 Barrington Street into a training hub.
