Newcastle Airport flies high with latest award

A North East transport hub is flying high after securing a national industry accolade.

Newcastle International Airport has been named Airport of the Year at the Aviation Industry Awards UK, following a vote by a panel of industry experts.

The airport was recognised for its customer service, network expansion, infrastructure improvements and sustainability work, beating Manchester Airport to the title.

During 2025-26, increased airline investment supported the launch of 22 new routes, including services to Berlin, Copenhagen, Lisbon and Nice.

It also welcomed a new easyJet base, with the airline subsequently expanding its Newcastle network to 32 destinations.

The recognition follows almost £60 million of investment in the airport’s facilities during recent years.

Improvements have included a three-storey terminal extension, creating a larger departure lounge and expanded international baggage hall, alongside an enlarged security search area that has helped ensure 99 per cent of passengers continue to pass through security in under ten minutes.

The airport is also working towards achieving net-zero carbon by 2035.

Its sustainability work was recognised with a 100 per cent score in the 2025 Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark assessment, ranking it first in its sector for measures including carbon reduction, biodiversity and sustainable travel.
