SLR Consulting appoints technical director

Environmental and engineering consultancy SLR Consulting has appointed Emma King as technical director and regional manager to lead its land quality and remediation services across northern England.

Emma will oversee teams in Leeds, Newcastle and Bolton, bringing more than 30 years’ experience spanning the defence, energy, water, highways and waste sectors.

A qualified specialist in land condition, she joins from engineering consultancy Sweco, where she spent almost 25 years.

Most recently, Emma led its energy and environment business unit, delivering a £5 million programme of environmental and infrastructure services for the Ministry of Defence.

In her new role, she will work with SLR’s practice lead for land quality and remediation across Europe, John Matthews, and regional business lead for northern England, Martin Hastie.

Emma, who will be based in SLR's Leeds office, said: “SLR is a growing business with a considerable breadth of technical, advisory and digital expertise, so I was attracted to this opportunity to drive growth of its land quality and remediation services across the north of England. 

“My remit spans contaminated land, remediation, coal mining risk assessment, engineering geology and waste management services but I’m also bringing strategic experience to the wider UK business, particularly in winning and managing public sector frameworks. 

“Sites rarely need a single discipline of service support as client challenges become more complex, so my focus will be on connecting our land quality and remediation work with the wider business. 

“Emerging contamination issues such as PFAS or 'forever chemicals' are a growing focus for clients and we want to provide the most complete technical and strategic multidisciplinary service offering on the market.”

Emma’s appointment forms part of SLR’s plans to grow its land quality and remediation capabilities across the North of England.

Martin added: “Emma’s appointment strengthens our team in the North to support clients on contaminated sites, bringing extensive technical and strategic experience of land regeneration. 

“Her focus on working across disciplines is exactly the direction we want to take our land quality team to best solve the complex land challenges facing our clients.”
