Festival unlocks York’s hidden spaces
More than 25 historic, cultural and community spaces are set to open their doors this weekend as a free citywide festival returns for its fifth year.
York Unlocked’s 2026 Autumn Festival will take place this Saturday (October 3) and Sunday (October 4), giving residents and visitors the chance to explore buildings and spaces across York.
Launched in 2022, the volunteer-led event celebrates the city’s built environment, showcasing architecture and places that are not always routinely accessible to the public.
This year’s programme includes Bishopthorpe Palace, Heslington Hall, Holgate Windmill, The Golden Fleece, Bedern Hall and Fishergate Postern Tower.
Kentmere House Gallery, RAFA House, Merchant Taylors’ Hall and York Medical Society are also among the locations taking part.

Many venues will operate on a drop-in basis throughout the weekend, allowing visitors to build their own itinerary and explore different areas of the city.
However, some participating buildings require free pre-booked tickets, with organisers advising people to check individual requirements before travelling.
Opening days and times, accessibility arrangements and booking requirements also vary between venues.
A spokesperson for York Unlocked said: “This is the weekend we have all been working towards, and we cannot wait to welcome people into some of York’s most remarkable buildings and spaces.
“York Unlocked is about giving people the chance to indulge their curiosity, step through doors they may normally walk past and experience the city in a different way.
“Come and explore, discover and enjoy York with us this weekend.”
Organised and delivered entirely by volunteers, York Unlocked has welcomed thousands of visitors since its launch four years ago.
The festival aims to offer a fresh perspective on familiar parts of York while highlighting the architecture, stories and spaces that contribute to the city’s distinctive character.
Full details of participating buildings, opening times and booking arrangements are available through the York Unlocked website or follow @YorkUnlocked on social media.
