Freight Island has unveiled Leeds and Newcastle expansion plans after securing fresh investment

Freight Island sets sail on UK-wide growth journey

A hospitality operator has unveiled plans to serve up a multi-million-pound expansion.

Freight Island says it is set to expand into Leeds and open an event space at an existing Newcastle base.

Bosses say “more venues across the UK and Ireland will follow” as it seeks to “create one of the most exciting hospitality and entertainment spaces in the country”.

The plans come after Freight Island secured £3 million backing from the Whiterock-managed Investment Fund for Northern Ireland, which officials say represents the largest debt investment made by the support arm.

According to the Belfast-headquartered firm’s blueprint, a two-floor, 63,000sq ft hub will open at Trinity Leeds later next year.

And a so-called music box – able to host live music and events – is planned to launch at its Newcastle hub, set in a former Debenhams store in the city’s Eldon Square shopping centre, in early 2027.

Dan Morris, managing director of Freight Island, which has further venues in Manchester and Brixton, said: “The team has worked closely with Whiterock to secure this investment, which has been invaluable as we transformed our venue in Newcastle from a derelict department store into a unique neighbourhood.

“Freight Island Newcastle will create 300 jobs, nurture creative careers and deliver long-term value, and we're excited for our expansion plans for the venue to take shape.”

Operated by British Business Bank, the £100 million Investment Fund for Northern Ireland offers support including debt finance and equity investment to organisations across a raft of sectors.

Jamie Cairnduff, Whiterock head of portfolio, said: “This is an exciting investment, which reflects our continued commitment to helping Northern Ireland founders scale ambitious businesses and become leaders in their industries.

“Freight Island has established a bold and innovative concept, bringing together the very best of live entertainment, music and hospitality.”

Sue Barnard, British Business Bank senior investment manager – UK and regional funds, added: “This investment reflects the scale of ambition behind Freight Island’s growth.

“We’re proud to see Freight Island carrying Northern Ireland’s exceptional musical talent and world-class produce onto bigger stages.”
