Blyth Tall Ship welcomes marketing officer

Northumberland maritime charity Blyth Tall Ship has appointed Iain Riddell as marketing officer to help raise its profile and attract new audiences.

Iain brings 22 years’ experience in the voluntary sector, having begun his career with Mencap before moving to St Oswald’s Hospice, where his work across direct marketing sparked an interest in the profession.

He subsequently gained a first-class degree in marketing and management from Newcastle University before joining the Community Foundation serving Tyne & Wear and Northumberland as communications officer.

His career has also included roles with the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle and Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter.

Having previously visited Blyth Tall Ship through his work supporting the High Sheriff of Northumberland’s charitable funds, Iain will now use his experience in charity communications and community engagement to increase awareness of the organisation.

His role will focus on telling the charity’s story, reaching new audiences and creating more opportunities for people to engage with Blyth’s maritime heritage.

Iain said: “I’ve always liked Blyth Tall Ship, and I’ve always thought it was Blyth’s best kept secret.

“When I saw the opportunity to join the charity, I could really see myself doing a lot of good here and helping to take the organisation forward through its communications and marketing.

“There is so much potential.

“I want to help us do more exciting events, both on the ship and at external venues, really bang the drum for Blyth and celebrate the town’s fantastic maritime heritage.”

Iain added: “There is a brilliant story to tell here.

“I’m really excited about being part of the next chapter for Blyth Tall Ship and helping people across the North East discover what is right here on their doorstep.”
