Revela Health advance AI-powered endometriosis detection with Arrow programme support
Newcastle based health technology company Revela Health is accelerating the development of an AI-powered platform designed to improve the detection of endometriosis following support from the Arrow innovation programme.
Founded by Molly Jowsey and Tom Willshare, Revela Health is developing software that analyses ultrasound scans to identify potential signs of endometriosis earlier in the diagnostic pathway. The condition affects around one in 10 women and can take many years to diagnose, often leaving patients without answers or appropriate treatment.
Through Arrow, Revela worked with Professor Noura Al Moubayed, Professor of Machine Learning and AI at Durham University, to strengthen the software underpinning the platform. The project focused on software architecture, reducing bias in machine learning models and ensuring the technology would be suitable for clinical use.
The collaboration also involved a review of the latest research and best practice in endometriosis diagnostics, resulting in guidance to support the development of a robust clinical decision support tool.
Molly Jowsey, Co-Founder of Revela Health, said:
"The support we've had from Durham University has been brilliant and we're continuing to see the positive impacts as we move forward. Their work has helped us to be really clear and specific about the type of data we need from our hospital partners. It's also helping us with our applications for funding."
The insights gained through the project are now helping Revela as it works with NHS and international partners to access larger datasets for testing and training its AI models.
Professor Noura Al Moubayed said:
"Endometriosis affects around one in 10 women, yet receiving a diagnosis can take many years. Earlier diagnosis has the potential to improve outcomes significantly. Our collaboration with Revela Health focused on developing AI approaches that are clinically relevant, robust and minimise bias to support faster and more reliable diagnosis."
Arrow allows organisations to access innovation support from across Durham University, Newcastle University, Northumbria University and the University of Sunderland. Arrow support is free to eligible organisations in County Durham, Sunderland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Gateshead, Newcastle and Northumberland, thanks to funding by the North East Mayoral Combined Authority through its Integrated Settlement Fund
