Durham theatre company takes London stage
An award-winning North East theatre company is taking one of its acclaimed productions to London following a successful regional tour.
Durham-based Elysium Theatre Company will stage The Moth at the Finborough Theatre in Earl’s Court from October 27 to November 21.
Written by South African-born playwright Paul Herzberg and directed by Jake Murray, the political thriller stars Faz Singhateh as John Josana and Micky Cochrane as Marius Muller, with Bridgerton actor Adjoa Andoh providing the voice of Joy Josana.
The production was first staged by Elysium in 2025, rehearsing in Stanley before touring the North East and North West, with Micky subsequently receiving a North East Culture Award for his performance.
The Moth began as a ten-minute online monologue created during the Covid pandemic before being developed into a full stage play over five years.
Set around an encounter between a Black British activist and a white former South African soldier during the 1990s, it explores themes including race, war, PTSD, apartheid, redemption and forgiveness.
Its London run will also feature post-show Q&As on November 5, 12 and 19, with guests including actor Vincent Ibrahim and former Northern Ireland secretary Lord Peter Hain.
Director Jake Murray says: “The Moth is a story of North East success.
“It was a huge hit when it toured up here with an incredible response from our audiences.
“We are proud to be bringing it to London to put it in front of a new audience.
“In doing so we are flying the flag for North East theatre and the incredible talent up here.”
