Engineering firm lands Wakefield project role
An engineering consultancy has secured work on a 100,000sq ft retail, leisure and healthcare development.
Wakefield-based HJ Consulting Engineers (HJCE) has been appointed by Asset Capital to support the Central City Fields scheme in East Wakefield, where groundworks are due to begin this month.
The firm will provide technical and consultancy services from concept through to detailed design, supporting the development of purpose-built commercial units using low-carbon construction methods.
Plans for the site include space for retail, leisure, healthcare and community uses, with Aldi, M&S and Starbucks already committed alongside smaller retailers.
A medical centre, day nursery, public house and JD Gyms facility are also planned.
HJCE director Mark Holloway said: “This is another fantastic project for us to be involved with, seeing us contribute significantly to the delivery of this important strategic site.
“The work will once again showcase our capabilities together with the engineering skills and design work available locally to help bring forward first class projects.”
The development forms part of the wider City Fields scheme east of Wakefield city centre, which is set to deliver more than 2500 homes alongside a new primary school, parkland and public spaces connected by the Wakefield East Relief Road.
Terry Shaw, project manager at Asset Capital, added: “We’re delighted to be able to bring forward this latest phase of development, as we know how important this will be for local people and businesses.
“And HJCE is an integral partner in helping us to deliver our ambitions for the site and vision to create top-class facilities.”
HJCE, which also provides highway and drainage design services, employs a 26-strong team from its offices at Wakefield 41 Business Park and is looking to recruit further staff.
Its current clients also include landowner Harworth Group and property developer Opus North.
