Family firm builds on strong foundations
A Newcastle-headquartered construction company is building on its family foundations as it develops a growing specialism in barn conversions.
Established by Mark and Tracey Greenwell more than 30 years ago, GMR Construction has become a multigenerational business, with all four of the couple’s children now playing key roles in its operations.
Oldest son Adam is company manager, overseeing projects, health and safety, materials and day-to-day work on site, while Lewis is a joiner, Joe a labourer and sister Brogan oversees administration and finance.
With Mark now taking more of a back seat, the next generation of the Greenwell family is increasingly driving the business forward.
Adam, who joined after leaving sixth form, said: “I tried the family business, and I’ve been working here ever since.
“It’s good to see them every day and we do get on well as a family as well as running the business.”
GMR Construction works across the North East on projects ranging from new-build homes and major extensions to commercial developments and full property renovations.
Barn conversions, however, are becoming a growing specialism.
The company recently completed one conversion and is putting the finishing touches to another near Corbridge, transforming a historic agricultural building into a modern home while retaining its original character.
Brogan added: “It started off as just an empty barn and we got permission to fully renovate it.
“It’s the second barn conversion we’ve done recently and it’s going to look amazing when it’s finished.”
The work is generating new enquiries and referrals, with the challenges of adapting older buildings also proving particularly rewarding for the team.
Adam added: “Barn conversions aren’t the easiest projects because you’re renovating a really old building.
“But they’re more rewarding as well because you’ve put all that effort into it.
“When you see the finished article, you feel proud.”
Alongside barn conversions, GMR Construction has also renovated listed properties, combining modern requirements with the need to preserve historic character.
And as the business enters its next generation, its family ethos remains firmly at its heart.
Brogan added: “The best thing has to be seeing my brothers every day.
“I wouldn’t usually get to do that if I worked anywhere else.
“I just love being around family all the time.”
