Buttress appoints heritage consultant
Architecture practice Buttress has strengthened its heritage consultancy team with the appointment of Phil Ward as senior consultant at its Leeds studio.
Phil joins from Leeds City Council, where he spent 15 years leading its conservation team and supporting some of the city's most significant heritage and regeneration projects.
His work has included helping secure the future of landmark buildings such as First White Cloth Hall, Tower Works, Round Foundry and Leeds Town Hall.
He brings extensive experience in conservation, placemaking and heritage-led regeneration, alongside established relationships across the built environment sector.
In 2025, Phil received the Mark Finch Award in recognition of his contribution to the built environment and placemaking across Leeds.
In his new role, Phil will support Buttress’ growing heritage consultancy team as the practice continues to expand its presence across Yorkshire.
He said: “I joined Buttress because they are the best.
“I’ve known Jenna Johnston and director Stephen Anderson for many years and the offer of working with them was too good to turn down.
“Buttress has values that I respect with expertise that cannot be matched.
“I’m looking forward to being part of the team and strengthening Buttress’ presence in Yorkshire.”
Jenna Johnston, associate director, heritage consultancy at Buttress, added: “I first worked with Phil back in 2015 through our project at the wonderful Grade II-listed First White Cloth Hall.
“Phil brought an enthusiasm, thoughtfulness, and practical approach that made him a great collaborator on a tricky project.
“We’re thrilled that he’s agreed to bring his experience and energy to Buttress, and to future interesting and exciting projects we’ll work on together.”
