Housebuilder takes plunge for charity

A North East housebuilder has taken the plunge to launch a year-long fundraising campaign supporting families affected by inherited heart conditions and sudden cardiac loss.

Staff from Barratt and David Wilson Homes were joined by friends and family for a charity sea dip at Sandhaven Beach in South Shields, marking the start of fundraising activities for its charity of the year, Poppy’s Light Foundation.

The event included a morning swim, sauna session, breakfast and DJ set, bringing colleagues together to support the cause.

Natalie Donnelly, sales manager at Barratt and David Wilson Homes and organiser of the Beach Brews and Butties Event, said: “It was fantastic to see so many people get involved in the event, support each other, and most importantly raise money for Poppy’s Light Foundation.

“I am incredibly grateful to everyone who came along, donated and contributed to making the event such a success.”

Poppy’s Light Foundation helps young people and families affected by inherited cardiac conditions and sudden cardiac loss, providing psychological, family and peer support alongside raising awareness and funding research.

The charity also campaigns for improved education and earlier identification of inherited cardiac conditions.

Employees at Barratt and David Wilson Homes North East will continue fundraising until July 2027, with proceeds helping the foundation maintain its support services and awareness campaigns.

Victoria Eagle, founder and chair of Poppy’s Light Foundation, added: “The Beach, Brews and Butties event was such a brilliant way to begin our partnership, bringing colleagues, friends and families together, even in true North East weather!

“Barratt and David Wilson Homes’ support will help us continue our work to improve awareness, education and earlier identification of inherited cardiac conditions, while supporting young people and families affected by them.

“Around 12 young people die every week in the UK from previously undiagnosed heart conditions.

“Together, through awareness, education, research and action, we want to help change that.

“There is something very powerful about charities and businesses working together for their communities, and we’re incredibly excited about what we can achieve with the Barratt and David Wilson Homes team over the year ahead.”
