Medium James Leighton at Chillingham Castle

Northumberland medium tells his story

A Northumberland medium who has built a national following through sell-out performances is preparing to share his life story with the launch of an autobiography at one of England’s most famously haunted castles.

Ashington-based James Leighton, who describes himself as the ‘Extra Large Medium’, will unveil his book at Chillingham Castle in Northumberland on November 3, with the exclusive launch event already sold out.

The autobiography charts his journey from childhood experiences in Hexham to becoming a professional medium touring venues across the UK and Ireland.

James recalls growing up near Hexham Abbey, where he says he regularly spoke to children in the adjoining graveyard, unaware that others could not see them.

He said: “When I was growing up in Hexham, I honestly didn’t think there was anything unusual about talking to the children in the Abbey graveyard.

“It was just something that happened and was part of my life.

“Looking back now, I realise those early experiences were probably the beginning of a journey that I could never have imagined.”

James describes coming to terms with what he believes are his abilities during his teenage years as a challenging period, before eventually pursuing mediumship professionally.

Starting out with demonstrations in small pubs and social clubs across the North East, James has since developed a growing national audience, regularly attracting sell-out crowds.

He describes his approach as evidential mediumship, which involves attempting to provide specific information that audience members can connect to deceased loved ones.

Rather than relying on general statements, James says his readings can include names, dates, descriptions and personal phrases that hold particular significance for individuals.

He added: “I’m very proud of being an evidential medium.

“For me, it’s about giving people something they can recognise.

“I don’t make things fit afterwards.

“If I’m giving someone a date, a description, a phrase or a particular piece of information, it has to mean something to them.”

Among the experiences highlighted in his story is a visit to the Williams II, a vessel operated by charity Blyth Tall Ship.

During the visit, James reportedly shared details about the vessel and former crew members that surprised the charity’s chief executive.

His autobiography also explores the personal experiences, relationships and challenges that have shaped his life beyond his performances.

The choice of Chillingham Castle for the launch reflects the subject matter of the book, with the historic Northumberland landmark widely associated with ghost stories and reports of paranormal activity.

For James, the publication represents an opportunity to reflect on a journey that began with childhood encounters he struggled to understand and developed into a career performing for audiences across Britain and Ireland.

He added: “The journey from those early days to touring around the UK and Ireland and selling out shows has been incredible, and writing the autobiography has allowed me to look back at everything that has happened.

“And launching it at Chillingham Castle seems pretty appropriate!”
